Career paths

Potential careers I can see myself perusing are photojournalism or portrait photography.

Portrait photography

The average salary for a Portrait Photographer is £14,349 in United Kingdom. Degrees in photography are essential in order to be a portrait photographer, however, this may not be necessary for individuals who have a mentor.

Photojournalism

Photojournalist pay varies by medium. Television photojournalists made mean wages of £33,818 in 2011, according to Statistics. Photojournalists working for newspapers, magazines or book publishers earned mean salaries of £30,812. To become a photojournalist you need a BA (Batchelors degree) in journalism, communications, or photography.

University's of my choice

At the beginning of unit 11 (October 12th) I already had a rough idea to the collages I wanted to attend, as my researched into the universities progressed I finalised them into the original five I started off with. This wasn't difficult for me as these were mentioned in past courses though to really narrow down the five I have listed them by choice and reasons as to why they are where they are on the list. Research alone took 3 weeks (October 30th) this was to fully finalise my choices. Overall the 5 Universities that I personally hope to get accepted to are:

  • Grimsby University

  • Sheffield Hallam University

  • University of Leeds

  • Birmingham City University

  • Westminster, London University

All of these university's provide the same or very similar courses I have researched (photography or Digital Media related). The last 4 weeks (Month of November) were spent on my personal statement, CV, Portfolio and presentation I felt like this was necessary in order to keep myself productive over, yet again, another lockdown. During my observation of the universities I have come to notice almost all of the universities have the same facilities so if some have different equipment I will list them.

First choice:

Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam would be ideal for me personally because I have Connections with other students that attend here, They have never uttered a wrong word about the university and actually encouraged me to apply here this renders me not completely alone in case I need help also it is a reasonable distance from home, there won't be any struggle coming to and from immingham. Sheffield's Photography course prepares their students for future careers in:

  • documentary

  • fine art

  • fashion and advertising

  • editorial

  • press and photojournalism

And many more, This course would help me stable a future in photojournalism and in Portrait photography which ideally is the path I wish to take. Sheffield facilities consist of; two industry-standard photography studios, portable lighting equipment, a dedicated digital darkroom including scanning, processing and printing facilities, darkrooms with enlargers from 35mm to 5x4 (specified on the website),print darkroom with both wet and machine process facilities and an extensive lending store where you can borrow industry standard equipment such as cameras, lenses and tripods.

chosen course:

Photography - Digital Media - 3/4 years - fulltime

The entry requirements are 112 UCAS points as well as a grade 4 in both English and maths. I feel fairly confident as I have already passed English I am just waiting for my maths this year. UCAS Code W640.

Why is Sheffield my first choice?

Sheffields University course highlight's specific career paths that I would like to take, such as Photojournalism and portrait photography as I mentioned previously, their photography course would help me stable a future in those careers as they require a bachelor's degree, however my mind is made up about becoming a photojournalist, they provide other possible career options which is excellent for me as by nature I am indecisive, some of these options include: documentary, editorial, fashion and advertising, scientific and medical as well as fine Art and many more.I find this intriguing as they still push learners to experiment and explore.

Distance is my only issue as I am fairly close with all of my family however they only want the best for me and have encouraged me to apply for further distance. Other then distance I can not find anything that would disadvantage me personally, I am extremely excited to see the outcome of my application and hope to get accepted here.

Second choice:

Grimsby University Centre

In with distance in consideration Grimsby would be beneficial for me as my family and I live in Immingham so whilst attending I could study from home however I should really push myself to leave my comfort zone and study further away to concentrate on my career building and confidence though and acceptation letter from the university would be most appreciated as it gives my more variety to chose from. I am a current student at Grimsby institute so hopefully that boosts my chances. The Grimsby facilities are well refined and manageable considering I am a customer as to how they operate having used them many times before. Distance is not an issue although residence on Grimsby campus is still an option. I see no negative outcome to applying at Grimsby university.

chosen course:

FdA Photography - SUBJECT TO REVALIDATION - 2 years - full time

The entry requirements are 80 UCAS points. There were no specifics on the website about academics such as maths or English. UCAS Code W640.

skills they provide first year:

  • Photography Skills and Studio Skills

  • Understanding Photographs

  • Digital Workflow Systems

  • Reportage: Photojournalism and Press Photography

and a few others, Again Photojournalism is provided in this course which benefit's me greatly however this is just a refresher course it doesn't work towards a BA which is what I would like.

Skills they provide second year:

  • Advertising and Industrial Photography

  • The Camera as Storyteller: Documentary and Street Photography

  • Authorship in Photography

  • Simulating a Commercial Context: Working to a Live Brief

as well as a few more again listed on the website. In order for me to achieve a BA (hons) I would have to apply separately to a top up course which is level 6.

Third Choice:

Westminster, London University

In 2013 The University of Westminster actually celebrated their 175th anniversary. Westminster University actually ranked 1st in UK, US, Australia and New Zealand for international Student diversity, with students from 169 countries.

Ideally Westminster university of London is third on my list, I absolutely love the location and all of the promising things the university itself has to offer such as the Harrow Campus which is just a 20-minute tube ride from London, the global hub for media and cultural industries as well as access to studios, dark rooms, print and finishing facilities with an extensive range of high-end digital imaging equipment this appeals to me again as I want to excel in digital imagery by applying here I could experiment with landmark and location photography which is something I have always wanted to do. Students also have access to a variety of opportunities, tools and resources, as well as dedicated career support, to enhance employability which is something that could really boost my confidence as well as reassure concerns or answer questions I have about employment.

Although one of my concerns is distance, I have a lot of family from my home town, Immingham not being able to see them is disheartening although I am aware they want the best for me further more My main concern is entry requirements, I already have a grade 4 in English however I have not yet completed my GCSE maths, this could greatly damage my chances of being able to study there.

Fourth Choice:

Birmingham City University

Birmingham city university is overall fourth on my list, Being in a large location is not only visually impressive but exciting to me as I come from a small town, being in a city is a completely new and exhilarating experience not only does the location have a lot to offer but the university facilities such as a black and white room, Two studios one with natural lighting and one with artificial lighting, a digital Mac suite (said to be a dedicated digital photography training room) as well as film scanners and a digital print room as I won't to excel in digital photography arts this university seems more to my interest Although I am slightly concerned about entry requirements, the university site isn't specific upon what grade it requires for English or maths.

chosen course:

Photography - Ba - 3 Years -  full time

112 UCAS points with 2 A levels, they also look out for good portfolios, UCAS Code W640.

Fifth Choice:

University of Leeds

Leeds's Photography course blends film, photography and media to help develop practical and theoretical knowledge to succeed in the fast-growing digital media sector. They explore historical and continually evolving relationship between film and photography through a rich combination of academic study and creative practice This to me sounds incredibly promising for a 3 year course. This university was one of my favourites to research. They have such a rich and admirable heritage that dates back to the 1800's maybe even before then this is why Leeds's University is joint first on my list, I hope I get accepted into this university just as much as I do all five However I would be extremely ecstatic to be accepted here.

chosen course:

Film, Photography and Media - Ba - 3 Years -  full time

The entry requirements seem to focus on A levels and not UCAS points. There were specifics on the website about academics primarily English which requires a grade 5 or 6, I have absolutely no hope of acceptance here although it didn't hurt to try, UCAS Code W600.

Covered on first year:

  • camera and editing

  • Photographic practice

  • screen narrative

As well as optional choices to chose from which were mainly history or theory research which is really interesting.

Covered on second year:

  • Thinking Photographically: Developing Approaches to Photography

Personal Statement

Becoming a photographer has shown no boundaries, looking through a camera, there are no limits to what I can see. Wanting to pick up a camera is the very beginning of something important. Whether it is an image of something small and fragile or something large and powerful that image is there forever.

Before my photography studies began, I was an Art and Design student of 5 years this started in secondary school I dedicated myself to GCSE art and successfully achieved a grade C which later helped me accomplish my application into collage as a Level 2 Art and Design student. Nearing the end of my first year, however, hopes of an art career subsided in my mind as did my confidence within my art, subsequently I found myself withdrawn and I left my art studies for mixed media, this being the re-energization I required thus my discovery of photography led me to my current position as a UAL Level 3 Creative Media (Photography) student, strongly studying photography for the past 3 years at TEC, Grimsby Institute. A fabulous journey in which I have learnt something new from someone new every day.

Upon starting my photography course in college, I had little experience with a camera other than the one on my smart phone and a film camera which mixed media focused on mostly film and advertisement. Anyone can take a picture on their phone, but holding an actual camera feels exhilarating. I wish to continue to thrive in photography as it is something I have enjoyed and excelled in for the past 3 years, with confidence I can say that in my time studying improvements can be noticed dramatically. I feel this path is more suited for me as I am always excited to learn, push myself and experiment with the different forms and techniques of photography such as film and darkroom and the fabulous visual representation this can achieve. Anyone can exhibit an interest in wanting to succeed, to become better is what truly makes a photographer, personally I believe that once you have that mindset there is nothing a person cannot exceed.

Just recently I have taken a keen interest in Henri Cartier Bresson's series dedicated to the photographic documentation of artists within their workspaces. Especially his work with the famous artist, Matisse. I must admit I like black and white photography and in Bresson's time photography was primarily shot in black and white. In the photographs I have seen Matisse is busy sketching and painting white doves that flap about his room. There is always something so elegant about his photography that I do not understand but it continues to draw me in, this is something I hope to achieve through my own work. However I am drawn to colour and love the work of Gregory Crewdson and his "Twilight series" through my research his work was said to be "disconnected from reality" as strange things happen in the twilight, this I found an exciting series and although the colours seemed muted in some photos, it worked incredibly well with what he wanted to convey, I found this inspiring and eye opening especially for my research. I hope to use all the amazing finds throughout my research in my own work, I find them truly admirable.

Initially, I did decide against university however, there are a lot of promising things about university that could stable my ideal career in the future through a bachelor's degree with Hoznour's which will enhance my chances in photography, I was firstly against university at the dread of owing money for the rest of my life. Another reason is again financially related I have not come from a background of financial stability, being able to look after myself was my main priority and I felt like that must start once I left college although from much consideration with support from family and friends, I have found the confidence and courage to apply. I look forward to the future and my university journey and the exciting opportunities that your higher education course will offer me.

Questions I could consider

During a university interview its always good to have a back up plan or note as towhead you might be asked in relation to to the university. Personally I agree with this strongly and have taken into consideration the possible questions I could be asked in an interview for university as well as a few responses to said questions.

  •  Why do you want to study this subject?

- Being a Photography student of 3 years its only natural for me to want to peruse something in that career, Nothing in my mind has wavered which for me is great, it means I want to move forward and continue to develop and grow not only as a photographer but as a person.

  • Why did you choose this university?

- The University's Photography course highlight's specific career paths that I would like to take, such as Photojournalism and portrait photography Your course would help me stable a future in one those careers as they require a bachelor's degree.

  • What are your main interests?

- Other then photography I still manage to keep up with my own art drawing characters and portrait for people as commissions this takes up a lot of my spare time as well as collecting when I have the money to.

  • What are your career plans?

- Potential careers I can see myself perusing are photojournalism or portrait photography. I like the idea of being a photojournalist simply because you can have your own business or be apart of a company the down fall of running a business however is finding people who would be interested in Buying your work. Being a portrait photographer would also be ideal because I already have experience with portraits as well as studio experience.
